Programs > Kindergarten Plus
The K+ Program at Zion seeks to extend and enrich the kindergarten experience of those children who are enrolled in the public school. Daily activities will focus on reading, writing, math, and science. In addition, the program offers beginning Spanish, art, cooking, and physical education. The students will also have time to work on age appropriate computer programs in math and reading. Some science materials from the Field Museum will also be used to enrich the science curriculum.
Some goals of the program include:
- Individualized instruction, especially in reading and math
Assessments will be done at the beginning of the year to determine the reading and math levels of each student. Individual and small group instruction will allow each child to begin at his/her current level and progress at his/her own pace. - Development of skills needed for the first grade
The K+ program stresses the development of reading, writing, and math skills. Whether your child is just learning his/her letter sounds and numbers, or beginning to read and do simple addition, our goal is to build upon and further each student's skill levels. - Teaching academic material in a fun, exciting way
The program will use games and engaging enrichment activities to supplement each student's current kindergarten experience.
Home Activities
Once or twice a week, a home activity will be sent home with your child. These activities can include a math or reading game, a small book to read, and word or sentence puzzles. They will be sent home in plastic bags and should take no more than 5-15 minutes to complete. This is a nice way for your child to gain extra practice in necessary skills. It also shows you what they have been doing at K+, and you can spend quality time together.
