Programs > Preschool > Junior Kindergarten

Our Junior Kindergarten program is designed for children who are 4 ½ to 5 years old, with previous preschool experience. This program uses multiple learning methods to facilitate the child’s own desire to learn about his/her world. Language arts, math, science, fine arts, games and social interactions are used in both large and small groups.

Both verbal and written language are explored in our study of language arts. Class books are made: encouraging expression of thoughts, giving meaning to written communication, building classroom unity and respect for each other and for books. Each child’s development is unique. The teacher observes, documents and challenges children. Letter and word recognition along with phonics and rhymes are explored. The children are challenged in their comprehension skills of reading materials. A writing table is available daily. The language arts study is designed to be fun and interesting.

Math is studied through daily activities such as familiarization with the calendar. Every day math problems are solved. Children are exposed to basic math skills such as numerals, counting, geometric shapes, patterns and problem solving. These skills are needed to build higher level mathematical thinking.

Science elements of observation, hypothesis, data recording and conclusions are experienced. With observation, children learn to sort and categorize. Several areas of science are explored including principles of healthy living. Physical development is also enhanced by using gross and fine motor skills.

Fine arts and games add enjoyment to learning. Fine arts include elements of dance movement, drama, music and visual arts. These elements encourage creative works and self-expression. Games provide a method of organized social learning. Cooperative games are our focus, thus minimizing competition in the classroom.

We believe children learn from active participation. They learn from interactions with the teacher and their peers. Classroom discussions and reflections are an important part of the daily schedule.

This program may also use a project approach sometime during the school year.
